Charles Leslie Barrett (1879-1959), naturalist and journalist, was a prolific and respected author despite his lack of formal scientific training. From 1906 he wrote for the Melbourne Herald for 33 years and edited the nature and travel books published by the Herald and Weekly Times. From 1910 to 1916 he was assistant editor of Emu. Journal of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union. In 1917 he went to Egypt with the Camel Brigade Field Ambulance, where he edited an issue of their journal Cacolet, and the monthly Kia-ora Coo-ee from April to December 1918. Back in Australia he edited the boys' paper Pals from 1920 to 1927. Many of his books were published in the twenty years between his leaving the Herald and his death in Melbourne on 16 January 1959. His impressive collection of books on New Guinea he left to his son, who subsequently donated them to the Administrative College of Papua and New Guinea. The remainder of Charles Barrett's library was sold by auction in 1959.
